Overview

The "Car Maintenance and Road Problem Skills for Women" course is a comprehensive practical training program specifically designed for women, aiming to empower them to understand the basics of their cars, recognize early warning signs of breakdowns, and handle emergency situations on the road with confidence and safety. Driving skills are not limited to the ability to drive on roads; they also include paying attention to precautions that protect the car from sudden breakdowns, which can be avoided with a little knowledge of simple repairs that do not require asking for help from others or waiting for someone to arrive to fix them.

The course extends over three days to cover broader and deeper aspects, including: identifying the internal and external parts of the car, reading the warning indicators on the dashboard, preventive periodic maintenance, handling common breakdowns while driving, road safety procedures, dealing with minor accidents, safe driving tips in different conditions, and modern safety systems in the car.

This program is designed to be practical and interactive, through hands-on exercises on real cars, simulation of emergency situations, and case studies based on real experiences of women. According to the experiences of specialized maintenance centers, similar awareness initiatives have succeeded in empowering female drivers to understand their cars and manage potential emergency situations without relying on external assistance.

Learning Journey

Program Outline

01

Day One: Car Basics and Recognizing Early Breakdowns

Introduction to Basic Car Components
Identifying the main parts of the car: the engine (types and basic components), battery (function and lifespan), cooling system (radiator, coolant, thermostat), braking system (discs, pads, brake fluid), tires (types, pressure, tread, date of manufacture), lubrication system (engine oil and types), air filter, and exhaust system (manifold, catalytic converter, muffler). Explaining the function of each part and its relationship to car performance. Opening the hood and practically identifying the locations of these components.
Reading the Dashboard and Warning Indicators
Explaining the meaning of the basic warning lights on the dashboard: Check Engine light – its causes and when it requires immediate stopping, Battery light, Temperature light, Brake light, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light, Oil light, ABS light, Airbag light, ESP light. When to stop immediately and when it is safe to continue with caution.
Unusual Sounds and Vibrations
Recognizing sounds that indicate a problem: sounds from the engine (knocking, squealing, rattling), sounds from the wheels (clicking, squeaking, humming), sounds from the exhaust (unusual roar, loud noise). Vibrations in the steering wheel or the car in general (during acceleration, braking, or at specific speeds). When these indicators require immediate stopping or heading to a repair shop.
Basic Preventive Maintenance
(1) Measuring Engine Oil Level: How to measure oil level and cleanliness once a month. Conditions for measurement (cold engine, car on level ground), using the dipstick, and interpreting results (clear and runny oil = safe, oil mixed with gasoline smell or dark = needs changing, low oil = needs topping up). (2) Changing the Air Filter: When to change (every 50,000 km or once a year, or when dirty), simple replacement steps. (3) Checking Fluid Levels: Coolant (checking level and color), Brake fluid (level and color), Power steering fluid (level), Windshield washer fluid (level).
Practical Workshop
Part One: Opening the hood of a real car and identifying all basic components. Part Two: Practical application of measuring engine oil and interpreting results. Part Three: Practical application of changing the air filter. Part Four: Checking the four fluid levels (coolant, brake, steering, washer) and identifying their locations and measurement methods.
02

Day Two: Common Breakdowns and Road Safety

Engine Overheating
Symptoms: Sudden rise in temperature gauge, steam coming from the hood, loss of power or complete engine shutdown, smell of burnt coolant. Common Causes: Low coolant level (leak in radiator or hoses), faulty thermostat, water pump failure, clogged radiator, cooling fan failure. Handling Steps: Stop immediately in a safe place, turn off the engine, wait for it to cool down (at least 30 minutes), check coolant level (knowing how to safely handle the radiator cap – using a cloth and opening slowly). Warning: Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot (risk of severe burns). When to call for roadside assistance.
Battery Weakness or Drain
Symptoms: Engine does not respond (clicking sound or no sound at all), dim lights, dashboard display flickering, problems with central locking or power windows. Causes: End of lifespan (2-3 years in hot climates), leaving lights on, alternator failure, corrosion on battery terminals. Jump-Starting Steps: Using jumper cables (always keep them in the car). Safe connection steps: Turn off both engines, put transmission in Park (P) or Neutral (N) with parking brake engaged, connect red clamp to positive (+) of the dead battery then positive of the good battery, connect black clamp to negative (-) of the good battery then to an unpainted metal surface in the dead car (away from the battery). Start the working car first, then the dead car. Preventive Tips: Check the battery after 2 years, clean terminals from corrosion using a wire brush with water and baking soda.
Tires and Brakes
Tire Inspection: Importance of checking air pressure regularly (effect of extreme heat in the Kingdom on tires – pressure increases in summer). How to use a pressure gauge. Recognizing wear signs (tread depth – using a coin to measure, appearance of inner fabric, sidewall cracks). Tire manufacturing date (reading the serial number on the sidewall). Tire Blowout: How to handle a tire blowout while driving (maintain direction, do not brake suddenly, gradually reduce speed, stop in a safe place). Changing a tire (theoretical explanation with steps – jack location, jacking points, loosening bolts, installing the spare tire). Brakes: Signs of brake problems (squealing or grinding noise, vibration in pedal or steering wheel, increased stopping distance, low brake fluid level). When to head to a repair shop immediately.
Steering System and Electrical Issues
Steering System: Symptoms of malfunction (difficulty turning the wheel, knocking sounds when turning, steering wheel vibration, power steering fluid leak). Common causes (low steering fluid, power steering pump failure, front suspension problems). Electrical Issues: Symptoms of malfunction (flickering lights, problems with power windows, problems with central locking, air conditioning not working, power cut-off while driving). Common causes (alternator failure, battery damage, fuse or wiring problems). How to check fuses and replace damaged ones.
Preparing the Emergency Kit and Personal Safety
Emergency Kit Components: Jumper cables, warning triangle, fire extinguisher (operational), first aid kit, flashlight (with spare batteries), drinking water, car phone charger, basic spare parts (fuses, spare bulbs), multi-purpose knife, emergency blanket, gloves. Safety Procedures for Emergency Stops: Place the warning triangle at a safe distance (50-100 meters behind the car), turn on hazard lights, stay inside the car in unsafe areas with doors locked, exit the car only on the safe side (away from traffic). Effective Communication: How to describe location and problem to relevant authorities (emergency services 997, traffic police 993, repair shops, insurance company). Using location-sharing apps to share your location.
03

Day Three: Accidents, Safe Driving, and Modern Safety Systems

Handling Minor Accidents
Correct Steps After a Minor Accident: (1) Secure the scene – stop in a safe place, turn on hazard lights, place the warning triangle. (2) Check the safety of all passengers – call an ambulance if necessary (997). (3) Exchange information with the other party – name, phone number, license plate number, driving license number, insurance company name and policy number. (4) Document the accident – take photos of the scene, damage, and vehicles from multiple angles. (5) Call the traffic police (993) if there are injuries, significant damage, or disagreement about liability. (6) Call your insurance company to report the claim and obtain a claim number. Your Rights and Duties: Do not admit fault at the accident scene, do not leave the scene before agreement or arrival of authorities, cooperate with relevant authorities. Accident Report Form: Information required to fill out the form (date, time, location, accident description, names of witnesses if any).
Safe Driving in Different Conditions
(1) Driving in Rain: Reduce speed, increase following distance (double the normal distance), avoid sudden braking, use headlights, beware of aquaplaning – how to handle it (release the accelerator, do not brake, steer in the direction of movement). (2) Night Driving: Use high beams cautiously (dim them when meeting another vehicle), beware of glare from oncoming headlights, increase awareness of pedestrians and animals, ensure windshield and lights are clean. (3) Highway Driving: Maintain a safe speed, use mirrors regularly, signal before changing lanes, beware of blind spots, take breaks every 2 hours to avoid drowsiness. (4) Mountain Road Driving: Use low gears, brake cautiously (avoid continuous braking on descents – use engine braking), beware of sharp turns, use lights in tunnels.
Modern Safety Systems in the Car
(1) Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): How it works (prevents wheel lock during hard braking), benefits (maintains steering ability during braking), limitations (does not reduce stopping distance on all surfaces). (2) Electronic Stability Program (ESP): How it works (detects loss of control and applies brakes to specific wheels), benefits (prevents skidding). (3) Airbags: Types (front, side, curtain), how they work, activation conditions, safety warnings (safe distance from steering wheel, not placing objects on the airbag). (4) Parking Assistance Systems: Parking sensors, rearview camera, automatic parking. (5) Warning Systems: Lane departure warning, forward collision warning, blind spot detection. (6) Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): How it works, what to do when the warning light appears.
Pre-Trip Car Inspection
Basic Inspection Checklist (Before Every Long Trip): (1) Tire pressure and appearance, (2) Fluid levels (oil, coolant, brake, steering, washer), (3) Lights (headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights), (4) Wipers and washer fluid, (5) Mirrors (adjustment), (6) Brakes (test in a safe area). Extended Inspection Checklist (Before Long Journeys): (7) Battery (check terminals), (8) Seat belts (all seats), (9) Presence of emergency kit, (10) Car documents (registration, insurance, driving license).
Comprehensive Case Study
Case: A woman is driving on the highway (traveling between cities) and notices a sudden rise in the temperature gauge and steam coming from the hood. After stopping, she discovers low coolant level. Required from Participants: (1) Identify the correct immediate actions (safe stopping, turning off the engine, waiting for it to cool). (2) Identify possible causes (low fluid, leak, thermostat failure). (3) Determine when it is safe to continue (if the leak is minor and fluid can be topped up) and when to call for help (if the leak is significant or there is another malfunction). (4) Communicate with relevant authorities (roadside assistance, repair shop, insurance). (5) Document the situation for future reference.
Final Test and Review
Short written test (20 questions) covering basic concepts (components, indicators, breakdowns, safety, systems). Review of key points over the three days. Open Q&A session. Certificate distribution.
